Deafheaven+Bosse-de-Nage – SPLIT LP

October 13, 2012October 13, 2012 Cheryl1 Comment

It’s no secret that here at Bleak Metal we (um…..me) are pretty into Bosse-de-Nage and their dastardly enigmatic ways (check out a review of ii and also iii which I did for SPB). The mysterious band have been consistently producing some of the most interesting and intriguing post-rock/punk infused black metal of the past couple of years and November sees the release of a split record with Deafheaven – a band that similarly challenge the concepts of black metal and what it really means.

For this release, Bosse-de-Nage recorded a brand new track – “A Mimesis of Purpose” – and Deafheaven deigned to take on something no one ever expected – a Mogwai cover. Yep. And holy shit, do they ever do this melancholic masterpiece justice.

It’s The End Of The Year Or Whatever….

January 9, 2012January 11, 2012 CherylLeave a comment

It’s that time of year again, where everyone goes all out to prove their exemplary credentials as a music lover and that they indeed are, the most metal. A time of year where lists abound – “Look at my fantastic taste everyone! Look at all the things I listen to that you’ve never heard of! Look at how obscure my musical interests are!”

It’s with that in mind, that I bash out a list of my own. If you’re interested in what my top six demo releases of the year are, check ’em out here: http://www.cvltnation.com/topsixdemos/

And for a list featuring things that aren’t metal at all (although yes, a lot of what you see below is on it), this is a link that has my personal top 25 on it: http://www.scenepointblank.com/features/music/scene-point-blanks-favorites-year-end-2011/2

As an aside, my top album of the year is Rome – Die Æsthetik der Herrschaftsfreiheit. I’m not including it here, because it isn’t metal and afterall, this is a metal blog right? I made a review of it, which you can read by clicking the title. Cool!

Again, for reasons of fairness, this will be alphabetical. Also, I just really like to alphabetise. Who knows how many will end up on this.

I’ve been trying to write something about this album for nigh on a week now (and by the time I actually get round to posting this, it’ll have been two months). There’s so much I want to say about it. But I don’t feel like there’s anything I could possibly do to make you understand exactly how this record will affect you. At the core, this is an album that deals with a deep depression and the subsequent thoughts and need to take that depression to an extreme.

Dan Barrett (Have A Nice Life) is the man behind this project.

Dan Barrett wanted to kill himself.

This is the examination of that period of his life. And ultimately whether it was and is, worth carrying on.

1. The Haunting Presence

2. Blackest Bile

3. Grave Filled With Books

4. Empty Churches

5. I’m Going To Do It

6. Spectral Bride

7. No One Is Ever Going To Want Me

8. A Sleeping Heart

9. Buried Above Ground

Cheryl Prime Listens To Things That Aren’t Metal

June 26, 2011September 23, 2012 CherylLeave a comment

Sometimes I like to step away from the genre of metal. Blasphemy ! But no. It’s ok to listen to music that isn’t metal. No one will think any less of you. And if you’re embarrassed to make your internet friends aware that you like other things, just turn off last.fm scrobbling, no one has to know !

I for one, don’t care if it’s not cool to be into other genres. Because there’s some darn good stuff out there if you look for it. And with that in mind, here’s ten albums that have come out this year that are brilliant and worth your time.

You’ll notice some bands are at least loosely associated with metal, but only due to others bands members might be in, or band history. So you can rest easy knowing it’s not just a list of indie rubbish.

Cheryl Prime Attempts A ┼op ┼en Favovrite Albvms Ov The Year So Far List.

June 5, 2011July 1, 2020 CherylLeave a comment

It’s nearly the middle of the year. And what better way to celebrate than with a nice list of brilliant albums that have come out already. There’s probably better ways to celebrate this passage of time, but it’s a Sunday and I can’t be bothered. I could easily have expanded this list to a top twenty. But that seemed like a lot of effort.

This list will be alphabetical, for the sake of fairness. And also because it’s too hard to choose a number one. Sorry.

Airs – Rainclouds Over The Remains Of Hope

May 9, 2011September 23, 2012 Cheryl2 Comments

I stumbled across Airs whilst having a bit of a trawl through bandcamp a month or so ago. Not really sure what I was looking for, I casually searched for “black metal” in the tags and this little gem popped up. I’m sure you’re looking at this cover and wondering how on earth it could be said to be black metal, “….but, the cover is all blue, and nice !” you cry. It certainly doesn’t strike you as a BM record on first glance, but delve into the sounds and you’ll soon be convinced.

Airs straddle that ever popular genre known as post-black metal; full of shoegazing, wistful long haired Frenchmen, and the occasional American counterpart. Somehow they manage to produce their music whilst the two members live at opposite ends of the country. A logistical nightmare I’m sure.

1.  Overcast -das ende der zeit-

2. Rainclouds Over The Remains Of Hope

3. Cast Into The Sea

4. Innocence

5. Everyone Has Died Post-Haste

6. Joyless

7. Never Without

8. We’re Still Drifting

9. Passing

10. Clear Skies -und zeit beginnt von neuem-
